Hang in there.

Break a leg.

Don’t give up.

Do your best.

Try hard.

Work hard.

Do (one’s) best

I will do my best.

Please do your best.

He is doing his best.

How do you say Gambatte in Enlish?  Is it “FIGHT?”

I have another embaressing story to tell you.

When I was a Study abroad  student studying Japanese in Tokyo, I had a chance to go to Osaka for 2 weeks and intern at Panasonic, in the international asia sales division.

At that time, my Japanese was still not so great, but I wanted to have this experience.

The very first day, my trainer said “We would like you to go in front of everyone and introduce yourself”.

I said “Right now??”  There were about 50 people on that floor, so I was quite intimidate.

But, I had been practicing GREETINGS and SELF INTRODUCTIONS so I felt confident.

I went to the front, gave my name, where I was from, why I was studying Japanese, why I wanted to do the internship, and I did quite well.  I was feeling confident.

Since I had done well with the introduction, I was a bit worried they might think I was fluent in Japanese, so I tried to say , “My Japanese is still poor, so I will try my best.”

But instead, I said “My Japanese is still poor, so please try your best.”

It got a bit laugh, and I was a bit embarrassed, but  it did break the tension.

And for the next two weeks, many co-workers came up to me and said “Nihongo Gambarimasu”.

(laugh)

How do you say Gambatte in English?

Well, this is a very “Japanese” phrase.  And what makes it Japanese is you can use it in many different situations.

In English, depending on the situation , we might say:

Hang in there.

Break a leg.

Don’t give up.

Do you best

try hard

work hard

and many more.

However, the phrase I think you can us for pretty much ALL situations is:

Do (one’s) best

For example,

I will do my best

Please do your best

He is doing his best.

So how about you? Do you have an embarrassing story mistaking English?
